The secret to understanding fractions is first to know that a fraction always refers to parts of a whole. But, unless we are talking about the same whole, it can be hard to image how different numbers are related.
If we look at 1/2 or 2/4, it is hard to see any relationship between the fractions unless we give them a point of reference. So, it becomes more clear if we said 1/2 or 2/4 of a pie.
